On our way home from Niagara Falls, it made for the ideal day excursion for my family. We stopped in Letchworth on the way back after visiting Watkins Glen State Park on the way up. Therefore, it is a fantastic plan for those of you who reside in the NYC region! I reasoned that stopping at state parks throughout the summer would be a wonderful opportunity to break up the journey and take in the natural beauty that the state of New York has to offer.
Letchworth State Park is a huge and beautiful area. It’s simple to see why people like this park. With the Genesee River running through it, a sizable canyon, and several waterfalls, it is 17 miles long. Because the gorge’s walls may reach heights of 550 feet in certain areas, it is known as the Grand Canyon of the East. Being quite honest, I believe the “Grand Canyon of the East” moniker is a bit of a stretch. Having said that, the park is very stunning. Letchworth is the place to go if you want to really feel like you’ve fled into Mother Nature’s embrace.
We made the decision to travel Park Road, the park’s major thoroughfare, throughout our day excursion. This is a great way to see the whole park and all of the distinctive features that contribute to its beauty. For instance, Lower Falls, Middle Falls, and Upper Falls are the three major waterfalls. Each of them was reached by driving there; we then got out of the vehicle and hiked or walked there and around it. The Letchworth state park fishing experience
Before the kitchen renovation, my family and I went camping in Letchworth State Park (south of Rochester) to unwind. Of course, I was considering where I could go fly-fishing and what I would be catching. I recognized bass, panfish, and pike after researching the prospects online. Great! I prepared for it by getting out my 6 wt. rod and some suitable flies.
We departed towards Letchworth. Wow, such a gorgeous location (see picture). Who would have believed such a location could be found in New York State. I never cease to be amazed by this state. We set up camp and had a good time that night. The next day, we decided which spots to fish in that the park had designated. just two locations along the Genesee River. The issue was that the water was chocolate colored due to the intense rain we had during this period, making fly fishing difficult. But they found another location to fish, which they dubbed the “trout pond.” Since it’s the middle of summer, I had a gut feeling that most fish would be deep and reluctant.
So that morning, we visited the trout pond. Observing some surface movement made me happy. The pond had panfish and rainbow trout, both of which were swimming about and lively. I was naturally eager to find out what options the pond life offered. I could see midge activity on the lake and in the air as I got closer to the pond. Small white insects known as midges were hatching and fluttering about the pond.
I perused my fly boxes that I had packed. Since there were also damselflies fluttering about, my first thought was to attempt an olive wooly bugger. I tied it on and startled several fish as a result. A sunfish briefly showed curiosity before pulling the bugger’s tail and spitting it out. We have fish that are picky, okay. I fished around in my fly collection in the hopes of finding a midge to tie on. I would only ever come across a size 16 white mayfly design. Although it was far too large, I decided it was worth a shot. Panfish and trout both gave me a couple stares. Even though I was struck by a trout, he just seemed to take it lightly. A couple other designs I attempted were unsuccessful. These fish, in my opinion, were overfished and quite choosy. I regret not bringing any trout flies that day. Oh well, whatever it is you are fishing for, you should have a broad variety of flies, from streamers to midges.
The Genesee River fishing experience
One of the few rivers in North America that flows from south to north is the Genesee River, which is slightly over 150 miles long. The river begins near the Pennsylvania border and travels through Letchworth State Park before ending up in Rochester where it empties into Lake Ontario.
The upper and lower Genesee Rivers are separated when they converge with the NYS Barge Canal. The river’s water is also utilized to maintain the flow of the NYS Barge Canal as it moves eastward toward the Hudson River. The river is a component of a flood-control project in Mount Morris, New York. On the river here, there is a 100-foot dam.
